The One Thing I Forgot That Mattered Most: My Third Trimester Hospital Bag Checklist

The first time I opened the closet, staring at all the baby clothes, I felt a wave of anticipation mixed with anxiety. This was it! The last stretch before a little human changed everything. I wanted to be ready, but what did that even mean? The hospital bag sat unopened for so long, and as the days turned into weeks, the reality of labor and delivery loomed closer.

What I didn't pack that made the difference.

When the time finally came and we rushed to the hospital, I was excited but overwhelmed. I had packed the essentials, diapers, clothes, toiletries, but there was something I didn’t include that mattered more than anything. Comfort. In my hurried state, I forgot to consider how I’d feel during labor and the postpartum days.

Weeks later, as I sat with my little one in the hospital, all I wanted was a cozy blanket and a pair of soft socks. The sterile environment felt so foreign, and I craved a semblance of home. It’s not just about checking items off a list; it’s about making sure you have the essentials that remind you of warmth and comfort.

Here's what to include in your hospital bag.

  • Cozy socks. Nothing beats the feeling of soft, warm socks on your feet during those long hospital hours. They provide comfort that makes you feel grounded.
  • Your favorite pillow. Sounds silly, but having something familiar around your head can make a huge difference in feeling at ease. Trust me, those hospital pillows can be less than friendly.
  • Snacks! You’ll likely be famished and underwhelmed by cafeteria options. Pack granola bars, dried fruit, or those fancy chocolates you love.
  • Comfy clothes. Think about what you'll want to wear after giving birth. Loose-fitting, breathable clothes not only offer comfort but also make you feel a bit more like you.
  • Charging cords. If you forget these, you’ll be scrambling to find an outlet. Make sure you're charged up for the inevitable photo sessions and video calls with friends and family.
